Academic Information for Study Away out of Shanghai

Academic Advising & Support

Each site has an academic administrator with whom students can discuss academic issues. The administrator at the site can assist students with academic support information for courses at the specific site. Additionally, students remain with their assigned Shanghai advisor during their study away experience. Students are encouraged to remain in contact with their Shanghai advisor by email when they are studying away.

To help you better plan for which study away site you want to go to, Shanghai Advising has developed two helpful tools. You can download the two documents from below:

Academic Accommodations

The Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) determines qualified disability status and assists students in obtaining appropriate accommodations and services.  CSD operates according to an “Independent Living Philosophy”, and strives in its policies and practices to empower each student to become as independent as possible. Their services are designed to encourage independence, backed by a strong system of supports.

Students currently registered who will be studying away must contact the Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities in order to discuss resources that might be required, to provide the necessary documentation, and to arrange for these services well before departure.

Additionally, students should speak to the Moses Center if they feel reasonable accommodations may need to be requested while away.  Accommodations include but are not limited to:  testing accommodations, note takers, use of computer for exams, materials in an alternate format, and provision of sign language interpreters to name a few.

More information about reasonable accommodations and how to register can be found here.

Global Course Options

You can now look up global course options at NYU's degree-granting campuses and study away sites through this Courses Satisfying Shanghai Degree Requirements. This helpful new tool is maintained by the NYU Shanghai Office of Global Affairs and will be updated periodically.

Please Note That This Is A Working Document And Subject To Change. This sheet is a list of all courses that have been approved as counting towards particular degree requirements. It will continue to expand as more courses are evaluated and approved. If you would like to check on a course that is not yet on the sheet, please email your academic advisor with the course number, name, and what degree requirement(s) you are wondering if it counts for.

Global Network Minors

Global Network (GN) Minors require 4 courses; your academic advisors can help you identify eligible courses offered at the study away sites. Local language courses at the study away sites count toward the four courses required for the Culture and Society minors (language courses can only count for once for Culture and Society minors).

Students can apply courses from different sites toward these GN Minors. Minors marked in red in the sheet can be completed at one site and possibly—with careful planning, adequate preparation, and depending on course scheduling and language skills and requirements—in a single semester.

Below is the list of all the GN Minors that NYU Shanghai currently offers:

  • Art History Studies
  • Art Studies
  • Australian Culture and Society
  • British Culture and Society
  • Central European Culture and Society
  • Cultural Studies
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation

NYU Shanghai students may appeal through their academic advisors for approval of an alternative GN minor if they can identify and justify a set of courses in the NYU Global Network or a particular study away site that added together meet the standards of a minor.

You can now look up GN Minors at NYU's 11 study away sites through this Courses Satisfying Shanghai Degree Requirements. This helpful new tool is maintained by the NYU Shanghai Office of Global Affairs and will be updated periodically.

Cross School Minors

Cross school minors offered by NYU Schools are available to NYU Shanghai students as listed on the NYU Cross-School Minors website. Students who successfully compete any of those Minors will have them identified by name as a Cross-School Minor on the student transcript.
