Summer Sessions Frequently Asked Questions

How are admission decisions made? How will I know if my application has been accepted?

Admission decisions are based on students' academic background and university record. Students with lower GPAs are encouraged to provide information on their academic goals in their personal statement.

You will receive an email notification regarding the status of your application. Once you have been admitted, you may visit your enrollment portal for program updates and instructions.

How can I find classes that I’m interested in? Will there be prerequisites required for enrolling into courses?

You can view a full list of our summer courses here. Please check whether you meet the prerequisites of the courses that you want to take before enrolling.

If you have a substitute course or AP/IB exam score that you would like to request to use instead of the listed prerequisite, fill out this Prerequisite Substitute Request Form. You will be notified of whether your request is approved and then manually enrolled by our staff into the approved class(es).

Once accepted into the summer program, how do I get enrolled into classes?

Visiting students, the first step is to confirm your spot on the Enrollment Portal once admitted so that your NYU account and NYU Net ID will be activated.

Once your Net ID has been activated, log into Albert, follow the instructions, select classes, and enroll yourself. You may take up to 8 credits per session. Non-Chinese citizens need to take at least 6 credits per session in order to meet visa requirements.

You may select different courses from what you listed in your application if you change your mind.

What are the deadlines to add and drop courses?

The add/drop deadlines are the Fridays of the first week of each summer session. For a detailed list of the important dates in the summer sessions, please see the Academic Calendar

How do I know if the course at NYU Shanghai will count for credit in my home institution?

Visiting students should check with their home institution whether the courses they will be taking at NYU Shanghai during the summer can be accepted and counted towards the degree requirements at their home institution.

What are the costs for each summer session?

The costs include tuition of $4,948 per 4-credit course, a program administration fee of $250, and a textbook flat fee of $250 (will be adjusted after the first week of classes based on actual charges and unused funds will be refunded). For detailed information, please visit the Summer Session Fees page. For information about billing, payments, and refunds, please visit the Bursar's website.

Are there scholarships available for the summer sessions?

NYU Shanghai does not have scholarships for the summer sessions, but there are external scholarships that you may see if you are eligible to apply for.

Please see here for additional information regarding financial aid options. Federal financial aid is available for US citizens and other eligible non-citizens during the summer sessions for students enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits, who also have a valid FAFSA on file, and are otherwise eligible. Students who already receive financial aid from NYU may contact the Financial Aid Office to inquire if they will have a summer financial aid package

How do I get my NYU transcript?

You can request a few types of transcripts through Albert or the National Student Clearinghouse by following these instructions. If you have any questions, please contact the Registrar at shanghai.registrar@nyu.edu.
