How Can I Resolve a Conflict with My Roommate

Living with a roommate may involve differences in lifestyles and expectations. The Office of Residential Education and Housing encourages residents to communicate openly and seek support when needed.

Step 1: Start with Each Other

Direct, honest communication is the most effective way to resolve conflicts or clarify damage responsibility before involving staff. We encourage roommates to utilize the QILIN framework (Q- ask Question to understand each other, I- Inform each other with your needs and concerns, L- Listen to understand, not just to respond, I- Initiate possible solution together, N- agree on Negotiated solution that works for you all) to ensure a healthy conversation to verify whether the issue may be the result of a misunderstanding or miscommunication.

During this discussion, you should revisit your initial Roommate Agreement to see if previously established expectations are being followed or need to be updated. Click here for more resources on how to resolve a conflict

Step 2: Seek Support from Your Residential Assistant (RA)

If you have made a genuine effort to resolve the issue independently but concerns remain, you should reach out to your Residential Assistant. Your RA can meet with you, act as a neutral mediator, and facilitate a structured discussion to help identify areas for compromise.
Keep in mind that the RA’s role is to support a fair resolution and help update your Roommate Agreement rather than to determine who is at fault.

Step 3: Connect with Professional Staff

If concerns continue after working with your RA, the matter may be referred to a professional Office of Residential Education and Housing staff member for additional support.

Professional staff will review the situation, explore possible next steps, and help determine the most appropriate resolution based on the circumstances. This may include additional mediation, further conflict resolution strategies. Our goal throughout this process is to support a safe, respectful, and positive living environment for everyone involved.
