Move-In Day is one of the most highly anticipated days of the university experience. After spending an entire summer preparing for your journey to NYU Shanghai, you will finally arrive to pick up your room key, and open the door to your new home.

Move Into Jingyao Residence Hall

All NYU Shanghai first-year students live with someone of a different nationality, participating in an exchange of knowledge, culture, and ideas. To help you navigate this busy time, we will provide you with a packing list of suggested items in one of the summer newsletters, and give you more details about your housing assignment.

NYU Shanghai will start the fall semester on Monday, September 2nd, 2024. Students will move into their residence hall on Sunday, August 25, 2024 and join a week-long orientation before classes start. 

Welcome Tables

Residence Hall: Our staff, Residence Assistants, and Welcome Leaders will be on site to welcome you from 9 AM to 9 PM on Move-In Day.

Campus: Our staff, Orientation Ambassadors and Welcome Leaders will be welcoming you from 9 AM to 9 PM on Move-In Day on campus. You will be able to pick up your Welcome Bag, set up phone and bank,and receive guidance on starting your journey at NYU Shanghai.

NYU Shanghai Airport Pickup Service & Arrival Transportation

On Move-In Day, August 25, 2024, NYU Shanghai will arrange airport pickup services to help students get to the residence hall from the Pudong International airport. Detailed arrangement will be announced in one of the summer newsletters.

If you are not able to take the airport shuttle buses, you can refer to the below information to arrange your own transportation to the residence hall.

Airports

There are two airports in Shanghai:

  • Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)
  • Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)

Both airports have two terminals, and are connected by Metro Line 2. Taxi rides to the Jingyao Residence Halls from Pudong Airport take about 40 mins. From Hongqiao Airport it takes about 30 min.

Railway Stations

There are three main railway stations in Shanghai:

  • Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station
  • Shanghai Railway Station
  • Shanghai South Railway Station

The majority of the trains go stop at the Hongqiao Railway Station.

From Airport to Residence Hall

Metro & Maglev

Metro line 2 runs from both of Shanghai's international airports and it can transfer at Longyang Rd station for Line 7 to arrive at Houtan station, which is a 10-min walk away from the new residence hall. It will cost about 10 RMB.

  • From Pudong Airport: Take the Maglev to Longyang Rd (it only takes about 5 minutes), and then transfer to Line 7 . Then get off at Houtan Station.
  • From Hongqiao Airport: Take line 2 then transfer to line 7 at Jing'an Temple Station. Then get off at Houtan Station.

When planning your arrival, please be aware that it may be inconvenient to carry large amounts of luggage with you on the metro. Also be mindful of the earliest and latest running time of the Metro is normally 6AM - 10PM. Maglev trains stop operation even earlier.

Taxi

Taking a taxi is the most convenient way to get from the airport to the residence hall or campus. When you enter the arrival hall after picking up your luggages, look for signs leading you to the taxi queue. Make sure you have the address of your destination ready in Chinese, since most taxi drivers do not speak English.

The fare to the residence hall usually costs around 80 RMB (around 10 USD) from Hongqiao Airport, and it costs around 120 RMB (20 USD) from Pudong Airport depending on traffic at your time of arrival.
