Kalkidan Fekadu Eteffa, '18 – Computer Science
I was born in Addis Abba, Ethiopia to a mother who beat the odds in attaining both her bachelors and masters degree. From my childhood to today, she has been the strongest woman I’ve met. Luckily, both my parents ensured that my sisters and I grew up knowing that we could pursue any route we wanted. While my sisters chose to pursue careers in medicine and art, I chose the path of computer science. I often jumped around in difference sciences, first taken by the interactions between atoms and molecules in chemistry. But I later found that I enjoyed the interactions between people and computers more – especially machine learning. A program that improves itself as it gathers more and more data fascinates me. Unfortunately, Ethiopia doesn’t have much infrastructure for computer science and rarely uses data efficiently for development. I plan to study machine learning and possibly advance the use of data analytics throughout Ethiopia.
Susan Xu, '19 – Neuroscience
I’m from Hangzhou. My Chinese name – Xinyi – means ‘peaceful heart,’ but more than that I have a curiosity for science and a passion for art inspired by the natural world. I work in different mediums, including photography and graphic design, and I find the best experience is when both science and art unexpectedly come together.
Lathika Chandra Mouli, '17 – Electrical Engineering
I’m Indian but was raised in Thailand. Home to me is wherever my parents are; and my parents were, in fact, my biggest motivation to go into Electrical Engineering and STEM in general. My mom is an Electrical Engineer herself, so watching her being able to quickly solve all sorts of problems with flawless logic was something I aspired to master myself.
Autumn Wu, '17 – Computer Science
I’m from Chengdu. I grew up interested in numbers, but although I loved science, some of my high school teachers tried to deter me, claiming that men were born to excel in science and engineering over women! I was desperate to study in a more diverse and open environment, and to prove my teachers wrong. After coming to NYU Shanghai, I chose computer science as my major, which I had never studied before. I fell in love with it.
