Your second year at NYU Shanghai can feel like a big transition. As a student, you may no longer feel the excitement and anticipation of being “new” to the college experience, but you still might not be clear on which direction to take with your time at school and then on to your career. The second year of college is an opportunity for you to explore your interests and continue gaining valuable skills and experiences that will help you thrive at NYU Shanghai and beyond.
Academics
Required Course(s): In the second year, students are required to take Perspective on Humanities (PoH) in the Fall semester. Please note you would need to receive a grade of C or above for Writing as Inquiry (WAI) to meet the prerequisite of PoH.
International students are advised to take Chinese courses if the language requirement hasn’t been fulfilled. See language requirement below:
- Study Away requirement: completed Elementary Chinese II or Elementary Chinese for Advanced Beginners.
- Graduation requirement: completed Intermediate Chinese II or Intermediate Chinese for Advanced Beginners.
Course Recommendations: Students are highly recommended to complete all core curriculum courses & major foundational courses by the end of their second year. Based on your study away course plan, you might also want to complete the prerequisite courses for your study away semester. Refer to your major website for more major course information.
Major Declaration: Students may declare a major when they have completed or enrolled in at least 32 credits (typically when registering for fall of their second year), and a major should be declared prior to completion of 64 credits (typically registering for fall of their third year).
Prepare for Study-away: Students may choose to study away for up to two semesters within the 4-semester window (second semester sophomore year through first-semester senior year). It is important for second-year students to start exploring and preparing their study away options and plans. The priority application deadlines are August 15 for spring terms and January 15 for fall terms.
Sophomore Programs: The Academic Advising Office provides a series of workshops and events tailored to help second-year students establish long-term academic goals, prepare for study-away opportunities, and reflect on their personal achievements and progress throughout the academic year. Stay tuned to NYU Engage for more information and to sign up for these events.
