Madeline P. Farquharson, Humanities Major. Study Away Site: Accra, Ghana

Mar 31 2016

I worked with a school called Noyaa, which is located in the James Town beach front of Accra. When I arrived on site, Racheal (the headmistress) spoke to me about the fact that they were at risk of losing all of their funding and would have to close their doors, sending just about 80 kids back into the community without access to education. When I heard this, I created a video in order to get out the message and call for help. Additionally, I created a GoFundMe, which was able to raise about US$ 4,600. It was a beautiful movement that ended up saving the school at least for this academic year. The school is once again in the red after July passes. This just goes to show how going into an internship or volunteer experience with an open mind and no set path you want or must take can make for an incredible experience.
