Capstone

From the moment you enter NYU Shanghai, you will be developing your capacity to think critically, creatively, and independently. As you progress through your degree, you will be encouraged to cultivate your own scholarly interests and to take relevant courses that will ultimately lead you to your senior thesis, or capstone.

The thesis or capstone project is an exciting opportunity to showcase your existing knowledge, deepen your understanding of a particular subject, and prepare yourself for the next steps of your career. The project acts like a bridge between what you’ve already done and what you want to do next, all while synthesizing the best parts of your liberal arts education. This is your chance to really focus in on a project that *you* get to design.

Unlike other courses, where faculty design your assignments and structure your learning, the senior thesis or capstone offers you a chance to embark on an independent research path. In consultation with faculty, you will come up with a cutting edge research question that reframes conventional knowledge or maybe even creates something entirely new. At the end of the year, you can share your research with the community at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
