  • Hail and Farewell: Dean of Students Charlene Visconti Steps Down, David Pe Steps In

    This month, Charlene Visconti will be departing her role as Dean of Students after nearly six years in Shanghai. Stepping into the Dean of Students role is David Pe, who has served as Associate Dean of Students since 2013. The Gazette sat down with both deans to talk about some of their favorite moments at NYU Shanghai, and what’s next on the horizon.

  • Students Dazzle in End of Semester Shows 

    As the semester came to a close, NYU Shanghai’s classrooms, hallways and performance spaces were filled with students dancing in costume, playing instruments, displaying paintings and photographs, and pitching business ideas as they completed and shared their final course projects.

  • NYU Shanghai Breaks Ground on New Campus

    Just hours before Commencement, NYU Shanghai broke ground May 30 on a new 114,000 square meter campus in Pudong’s Qiantan district. When completed in 2022, the new campus will roughly double the amount of classroom space currently available at the Century Avenue campus, and will include a 5,000-square-meter library, roughly 7,000 square meters of lab and research space, and new dedicated athletic space.

  • US and Chinese Economists Propose “A Way Forward” on Trade

    Thirty-seven of the world’s most prominent Chinese, American, and international economists and legal scholars, including five Nobel laureates, proposed a new way forward in resolving the current trade conflict between the United States and China in the NYU Shanghai auditorium on October 27.

  • NYU Shanghai Launches Two New Ph.D. Programs and One Master’s Program

    NYU Shanghai expanded its graduate offerings in 2019 with new Ph.D. programs in Transportation Planning and Data Science and a new Master of Arts in Interactive Media Arts. The new programs bring the total number of Ph.D. programs to eight and master's programs to five.

  • Research: New Findings in Neuroscience, Witness Identification, and Astrophysics

    Prof. Jeffrey Erlich explored the factors influencing immediate versus delayed gratification. Prof. Bruno Abrahao showed how social media might be analyzed to evaluate drug effectiveness. Fluid dynamics helped Prof. Jun Zhang discover stability and erosion are the main factors that make fragments of shooting stars cone-shaped. And Prof. Pekka Santtila found the maximum distance from which a witness can make a reliable identification.

  • Sports Roundup: Sprinkling Violet Pride Across Shanghai

    In the spring, NYU Shanghai joined Shanghai’s University Sports Federation, brought home tournament trophies, and fielded teams in several new sports. This autumn, our teams kicked off their first year as full members of the Sports Federation and the women's soccer team earned 3rd place out of 17 teams in the 2019 Shanghai College Football League tournament. They even caught FIFA's eye.

        • Dean Yuxin Chen on “Participation” in Technology and AI  

          CAIJING reported on Dean of Business Yuxin Chen's remarks in the Sanya Forum 2019 - "Responding to a Challenging Global Landscape" on December 9. “As technology continues to develop, the effect of human participation has become more powerful,” Chen said. “With AI, there are more ways for humans to participate in the entire value chain, such interactions are more effective and involve more parties... For example, an employee can participate in sales, while also contributing to product design.”

        • Prof. Wang Jing on Blockchain Technology

          Channel News Asia interviewed Assistant Arts Professor of Interactive Media Business Wang Jing on blockchain adoption on November 14. Wang commented on the recent state-led blockchain campaign in China and the Chinese central bank’s Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP) project. “This is part of China's comprehensive national strategy to catch up with developed countries and develop emerging areas of innovation and technology, not just driven by the Sino-US trade friction temporarily,” Wang said. She begins speaking at the 02:31 mark.
