Seminars Seeding Interest in Science

An array of open science seminars has kicked off at NYU Shanghai since the beginning of the semester and will extend to April and May.

On March 22, Professor Xia Weiliang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, invited by Yu Danyang, Associate Professor of Practice of Biology at NYU Shanghai, gave a lecture on the role of sirtuins in prostate cancer to some 20 listeners including students and professors.

In his talk, Professor Xia introduced the function of a group of protein Sirtuns in promoting or inhibiting different types of cancer. He then presented research conducted in his lab to study the molecular pathway of Sirtuns function in prostate cancer, as well as therapeutic significance of using small molecules to regulate Sirtuns.

“An interdisciplinary approach is usually quite helpful for us to explore what is yet unknown,” he said at the end of the discussion.

"The seminars will be held twice a month and they are proving to be popular with students taking the sciences," said Constance Bruce, Director of External and Academic Events.

April 12: Professor Mark Tuckerman from Department of Chemistry and Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, NYU New York, hosted by Professor William Glover.
The title of his talk is: Chemistry in a virtual laboratory: How computers shifted the paradigm from “in solution” to “in silico"

April 26. TBA. Possibly a faculty candidate talk.

May 3: Professor Hanna Rapaport from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel, hosted by Professor Avaraham Parola.
The title of her talk is: Polypeptide-peptide nanoparticles (PoP-NPs) platform for targeted intracellular drug delivery.

May 10: Professor Avaraham Reznick from our own faculty, hosted by Professor Avraham Parola.
The title of his talk is: Smoking the great evil.

May 12: Professor Kirsten Edepli from NYU Abu Dhabi. Hosted by Professor David Fitch and Professor Yu Danyang.
The title of her talk is to be announced.
