Students from New York University Shanghai stage a flash mob in a shopping mall in Shanghai yesterday to initiate their new semester. As part of the orientation for the school’s first 295 students, including 145 international students from 36 countries, the flash mob lasted three minutes. The first Sino-US joint venture university starts admission for the inaugural undergraduate freshmen class from the 2013 fall semester. New York University, founded in 1831 by a then US treasury secretary, is the first American university to receive independent registration status from China’s Ministry of Education. The university has set up the joint venture with East China Normal University. Graduates of NYU Shanghai will get a double bachelor’s degree from both the local branch and the New York-based main campus.
