On March 10 to 11, NYU Shanghai’s Human Resource Department hosted a forum on "Human Resource Management Forum in International Education." The forum invited more than 40 HR management and international exchange and cooperation officers and peers from 18 institutes across China, including China Europe International Business School, Duke Kunshan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, Guangdong-Israel Institute of Technology and other joint venture universities, and "Double First-Class" universities under the Ministry of Education, including East China Normal University and Donghua University. New research-oriented universities such as ShanghaiTech University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and West Lake University also were in attendance. The guests gathered at the New Bund campus to share their experiences and best practices, as well as analyze and discuss challenges.

The forum was attended by many government-level representatives, including Ms. Huang Hong, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, Mr. Feng Donghui, Director of the Foreign Experts Office, and Mr. Wang Qingyu, Director of the High-end Professionals Division of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Ms. Huang Hong spoke of how NYU Shanghai has become a model of international education. “NYU Shanghai has set an example for inviting international talents and promoting international exchanges in higher education in recent years,” she said. NYU Shanghai provides a reference for the development of policies and regulations related to recruitment, and practical case examples as well." Mr. Wang Qingyu said he was optimistic about the welcoming atmosphere schools like NYU Shanghai are creating for attracting distinguished scholars. “[We are]enriching the talent pool in the universities in Shanghai, and further enhancing the vitality of innovation and development in universities,” he said.

Professor Yan Guangcai, Chairman of the Higher Education Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Higher Education and Director of the Institute of Higher Education of East China Normal University, gave a keynote speech on "the originality, characteristics, and evolution of contemporary science. He explained the relationship between the cultivation, screening, and selection of scientific and innovative talents has developed throughout history, and the impact of social and cultural environment, educational systems, scientific research system and culture, and organizational system and culture. Human resources managers were inspired by their working fields of talent evaluation and assessment, salary system design, career, and organizational environment optimization, etc.

As China's higher education system continues to internationalize, human resource management in international educational institutions is facing more pressure and more significant immediate challenges than ever before, especially during the past three years of the global pandemic. The forum focused on five major topics, with 23 sessions on topics including the introduction and recruitment of international talents in the post-pandemic era, talent empowerment development and stimulating organizational vitality, employee wellness, digitalization of HR management, foreign talents compliance management, and evaluating service quality of international talents.

NYU Shanghai’s HR Director Dr. Guo Wei closed the forum by encouraging the attendees to continue to collaborate and communicate as each institution worked to develop.,” All of us are brave pioneers,” she said. “In this ever-changing and complex international environment, we dare to explore and innovate.” She exhorted her colleagues to continue to “cross the river by feeling the stones” and develop their daily work practices while relying on the guidance of existing policies. “NYU Shanghai is also a member of this team of pioneers and explorers,” she said.“By initiating this forum, we hope to promote stronger collaboration and communication among institutions of higher education, and most importantly, to jointly build and share a set of mechanisms at the practical level, so that useful, usable, and easy-to-use policies are ahead of problems, adjust the best posture in time, and seize opportunities to face the unpredictable challenges."
