Tim Byrnes, NYU Shanghai Assistant Professor of Physics and member of the NYU-ECNU Institute of Physics, has been selected as one of the “Thousand Talents Program for Distinguished Young Scholars," an initiative of the Chinese government to attract high-level talent from overseas to work in China.
Tim works in the field of quantum information science, where the aim is to apply quantum mechanics to develop new technologies Some of the ideas that he is developing include using ultracold atoms for precision measurement devices at the quantum limit and atom chip systems for developing a new type of quantum computer. He has also worked broadly in the fields of condensed matter physics, investigating Bose-Einstein condensates in semiconductors, and high energy physics where he was the first to propose a method of solving lattice gauge theories on a quantum computer.
