At 4:30pm on Tuesday, September 24th in the Interactive Art Media Major Communications Lab, Professors Marianne Petit and Matthew Belanger gave a presentation to students and staff on the use of NYU Shanghai's new 3D printer.
The 3D printer, through computer programs such as 123D Design, allows students and faculty to print 3D models they have designed. While Professor Petit explained how to use the software, Professor Belanger used the 3D printer to create small orange and purple toy robots. NYU Shanghai freshman Nicholas Sanchez said, "I can't wait to explore the intricate facets that 3D printing provides."
Currently, the communications lab has two 3D printers that can print small monochromatic models. Mercy-Angela Nantongo, a student attending the meeting, excitedly commented, "It's awesome. I can't wait to spend more time with the printers." As of now, the use of the 3D printers is restricted to students who chose the interactive media major, though students from other majors can request permission to use the technology.
The Interactive Media major, Professor Petit explains, is an intersection between engineering, computer science and the arts. The 3D printers allow students to participate in "learning by doing." This semester, interactive media majors have two classes, Computational Media and Communications Lab, with two new electives to be offered in spring.
