NYU Shanghai Faculty Grows to 178

More than 40 new faculty from around the world will join NYU Shanghai for the 2018-19 academic year, Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen said.

The new appointments include 11 tenured and tenure-track professors in nine academic areas ranging from Urban Design to Engineering and Management, 19 visiting professors, and 14 full-time continuing contract faculty.

"Each year NYU Shanghai faculty not only expands in size but deepens its academic strengths. We are particularly pleased this year to have such a strong group of faculty join us in developing our world-class research and teaching capabilities, Waley-Cohen said. "I look forward to working with each and every one of them as the year progresses!" 

Since 2014, the University’s full-time faculty has grown from 102 to 178, and includes scholars from more than 20 countries.

“I am excited to work with the highly diverse group of students and faculty, which is an ideal setting to empower deep, meaningful communication across peoples and cultures,”  said Jace Hargis, the inaugural Director of NYU Shanghai’s Center for Teaching and Learning. The potential for creating new models for education here in Shanghai is great, he said, and could be shared and showcased around the world.

Zhao Lu, who joins NYU Shanghai from Max Planck Institute for the History of Science as an assistant professor of Global China Studies, said he was attracted to this campus by the unique opportunity to be simultaneously connected from Shanghai to different communities across the NYU global network.

Other new faculty were excited by the chance to make Shanghai itself a subject of their research: “Not only does NYU Shanghai provide great resources for research and teaching,” Julia Hur, new assistant professor of management joining NYU Shanghai from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University said, “the city itself is also a stimulating and attractive place for studying globally networked companies and organizations.”
