Then, in April, on a spring break trip to the caves with professors and classmates, Brooker was able not only to see “her” cave, Cave 57, but to present her research standing before the actual sculptures and paintings she had studied for so long.

Scene and Heard

  • “Today I think we see Asia being defined in multiple arenas by institutions – international institutions….We see it defined by institutions of strategic studies, and in the media now not only by journalists, but by bloggers and social media. And I think that each of these ways of finding Asia reinforces a multiplicity rather than a unitary sort of vision of what Asia is.”

-- Harvard University Mehra Family Professor of South Asian Studies Sunil Amrith

On May 6, Sunil Amrith joined NYU Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and of History Zachary Lockman, Harvard University Professor of Comparative Literature and of East Asian Languages and Civilizations Karen L. Thornber, and NYU Shanghai Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen in “Asia in a Global Age: A Conversation” to reframe what the study of Asia truly means.

The four professors, whose areas of expertise span the breadth of the Asian continent, discussed how new transnational, transdisciplinary programs such as NYU Shanghai’s Center for Global Asia can generate scholarship that better reflects the global nature of Asia’s past and present identities, especially as seen from an Asian perspective. The group also agreed that such centers present unique solutions to problems faced by the humanities during an era that is simultaneously optimistic about global understanding and marked by increasing nationalism.
