  • Faculty to Build On-Campus "Re-makerspace"

    NYU Shanghai art professor Monika Lin and instructor Marcela Godoy have won an NYU Green Grant to create a “Re-makerspace” in the Academic Building. The Re-makerspace will serve as an on-campus hub for community members to take plastic garbage and transform it into practical objects such as coin purses, jewelry or art objects.

      “We wouldn’t have sold as many copies if it was titled ‘Wisconsin by the Book.’” Liam Callanan talked about the challenges and rewards of tackling a well-known city like Paris in his latest novel Paris by the Book at the March 26 Literary Reading Series.

      NYU Shanghai’s “Young Entrepreneurs” series welcomed Jian Lili, the founder of 简单心理 (translation: simple psychology), an online platform that helps connect patients with professional counselors and other mental health resources on March 27. Named in 2016 to the Forbes’ Asia 30 Under 30 list, Jian shared her journey of entrepreneurship. “When I started, I had expected to face problems maybe once every six months,” she said. "But now, every day, there is a problem to deal with." Nevertheless, running and building a business has been worth it, she said. "It's fun. You're creating new things, seeing new things at such a young age."

    • Ethics in AI? The Sooner the Better!

      Wenhui Daily quoted Professor of Computer Science Zhang Zheng on the ethics of Artificial Intelligence. Zhang objects to the trend of “develop first and then correct mistakes." Zhang says the assumption that ethics regulations in the field of AI are often stumbling blocks to breakthroughs in science and technology “has to be broken.” He says “we should view ethics and innovation in science as a complete whole, and think of them as the ‘building blocks’ of a new world.”

Join us in the “backyard” of NYU Shanghai, and help us prepare a place for home-grown veggies to “spring” through the soil.

        Talk | “If even the Chinese grow wings and fly”: Mapping Martial Arts Genealogies on the Swahili Coast
         

        Derek Sheridan, an Assistant Research Fellow with the Institute of Ethnology at Academia Sinica, presents the case of BAFIMA, a Karate Dojo in Bagamoyo, Tanzania and its founder, Sempai Ally, who views his life as a debt to reveal the “real pasts” of the martial arts. Sheridan will trace how a particular set of practices/aesthetics have come together which can neither be considered derivative of East Asia nor glossed simply as “African appropriation,” but are rather mapped within Islamic geographies which defy continental categories.

        Talk | Rare Earth Geopolitics: A Case of Economic Statecraft?

         

        In an increasingly globalized world, how might world powers respond to growing resource competition? How does the use of economic statecraft impact power relations in a time of renewed global power competition and trade disputes? Sophia Kalantzakos, Global Distinguished Professor in Environmental Studies and Public Policy at New York University will talk about her latest research on rare earth geopolitics.
