Visual artist and documentarian Salem Mekuria strives to give voice to marginalized women through her filmmaking. In her 1991 documentary film Sidet: Forced Exile, Mekuria presented the stories of three Ethiopian women who were exiled by the Eritrean War of Independence. After escaping the conflict, these women faced an exile where, as one woman  sings in the film, they experienced "a silence for all seasons."  During a recent visit to NYU Shanghai, Mekuria sat for a wide-ranging interview on both the craft and social impact of documentary film with Global Perspectives on Society (GPS) Teaching Fellow, Dr. Fareed Ben-Youssef.
