'Dance for Camera' is a video production by artist and choreographer Aly Rose, created in conjunction with New York University Shanghai’s dance program and three leading art spaces in Shanghai. This series of photographs capture those performances. Rose's students from NYU Shanghai's choreography and dance classes performed among the artworks at the Long Museum, West Bund Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, in some cases alongside professional dancers. In 'The Turning Point', performed at the Long Museum at the West Bund Art Center, the dancers perform among the bare concrete columns of the former industrial building. “Using chairs coupled with the 1979 ‘Crisis of Confidence’ speech by former President Jimmy Carter, adds a dimension and exploration of the role of institution and the role of the individual. The relationship of the chair and the individual become intrinsically intertwined as does their fate.” - Aly Rose Drawing inspiration from the architecture of the venues as well as the art therein, Rose creates a platform for choreographic storytelling and creative expression. The choreography for 'Blackfish + Black Wave' was inspired by Hu Liu’s installation 'Dark Wave' on view at the Shanghai Art Gallery in May. "If you spend time staring into the black paintings, you can see millions of tiny strokes creating what appears as wind blowing, or seas moving, or atoms gyrating," says Rose. "There is tremendous energy and excitement inside. Likewise, in our dance, we use small movements, tiny gestures, and simply move up and down incrementally rippling out into this grand finale." “My teaching philosophy is to give each student a set of trained skills in a safe, stimulating and challenging environment that can manifest the artist within. It is my strong conviction that there is an artist in each student,” said Rose. Meanwhile, 'New Book of Mountain and Seas' sees students use dance in front of works by painter Qiu Anxiong at the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai. "Cell Calligraphy" sees students dance in front of works by painter Wang Dongling at the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai. Drawing inspiration from painter Zheng Chongbin, "Distressed Geometry" was also performed at Shanghai's Museum of Contemporary Art, choreographed by Aly Rose and performed by Anneliese Charek. "Karma," performed at Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai in November 2016. Inspired by paper artist Leah Lihua Wong's works "Random Happenstance" and "Illuminating," dancers Janice Luo and Isabel Adler performed "Two" by Aly Rose at Shanghai's Museum of Contemporary Art.
