Professor Gang Fang Wins NYU GIPH Research Affinity Group Network Challenge

Gang Fang (NYU Shanghai Assistant Professor and Affiliated Assistant Professor in Biology at the Center for Genomics and System Biology at NYU) and Professor Jane Carlton (Director of the Center of Genomics and System Biology at NYU) were recently awarded the NYU GIPH (Global Institute of Public Health) Research Affinity Group Network Challenge Grant.

Encouraging global partnerships, the award supports research-oriented projects in a global setting that collaborate with NYU Global Network University (GNU) sites or partners that will potentially lead to the development of funding from external sources. Awarded projects are expected to strengthen the scientific evidence base applicable to several key global public health areas: addiction, environmental health, global mental health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), public health policy, and reproductive/sexual health, such as HIV.

Fang and Carlton’s City Microbiome project involves the study of microorganisms in urban environments—in this case both New York and Shanghai, breeding grounds for trillions of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and other protozoan species.

NYU Shanghai students are welcome to take part in the City Microbiome project, which will focus on the detection of transmissible pathogens and antibiotic resistant genes in both cities.
