This fall semester, NYU Shanghai welcomes 20 new faculty members from nine countries and regions. With expertise spanning 11 disciplines ranging from Computer Science to Mathematics, this cohort of educators and researchers bring diverse perspectives and reflect NYU Shanghai’s commitment to fostering a multidisciplinary academic environment that cultivates globally-minded graduates. Over the past 11 years, the faculty body has grown from 118 to 273, and now represent 32 nationalities, making it our most diverse faculty community to date.
Research is always a key focus at NYU Shanghai. Professor of Accounting Sterling Huang, a Shanghai native who grew up in Australia, joins the faculty after over a decade of teaching at Singapore Management University. His research, which lies in understanding the design of corporate governance to improve corporate decisions, has been published in leading academic journals and widely cited in news outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. He said he hopes to cultivate more young talent and contribute to the growth of the University.
Assistant Professor Faculty Fellow of Political Science Qian Jing, who previously taught at Princeton University, studies China’s role in international economic governance. He was attracted to NYU Shanghai because of the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and its vibrant, diverse community that matched his academic and professional aspirations. He looks forward to collaborating with other faculty across various disciplines to explore the intersections of Social Sciences and Global China Studies, particularly in relation to China’s ascending role on the global stage.
“NYU Shanghai’s unique position as a global institution in China provides an unparalleled opportunity to engage with students and scholars from around the world while contributing to the academic discourse on China’s role in international affairs,” he said. “I am eager to contribute to NYU Shanghai’s mission of bridging cultures and advancing knowledge in our increasingly interconnected world.”
As a Shanghai native, Qian said joining NYU Shanghai is a homecoming for him and he is excited about re-immersing himself in the city’s rich cultural heritage.
Some of the new faculty hires are involved in cutting-edge projects. Assistant Professor and Faculty Fellow of Interactive Media and Business (IMB) Helena Hang Rong’s PhD research at Columbia University examined the use of blockchains in urban and community governance. Her research seeks to further understand innovative technologies and methodologies to foster social impact in urban decision-making and develop adaptive urban interfaces that respond to evolving community needs.
“NYU Shanghai provides an ideal platform for students and faculty from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to engage in meaningful dialogues and brainstorm innovative solutions to complex societal challenges,” Rong said. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with them.”
Many new faculty members are committed to combining their research with teaching. Clinical Associate Professor Jana Fedtke joins the Writing Program after teaching at Northwestern University in Qatar. Her research interests range from algorithmic authorship to transnational literatures with a focus on South Asia and Africa. Most recently, she has explored the transformative effects of ChatGPT and Large Language Models on current and future writing practices. “[I am] excited to return here to work as part of the vibrant NYU Shanghai community of students, staff, and faculty members,” she said, adding that she is looking forward to discussions with students about how to develop AI literacies.
Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen welcomed the new faculty to join the NYU Shanghai community. "We have once again been able to recruit a remarkably strong cohort of new faculty to NYU Shanghai, scholars and teachers from a broad range of disciplines who have been trained at some of the best universities in the world,” she said. “We are delighted that they have chosen to join us, and look forward very much to getting to know them over the coming months.”
