NYU Shanghai Holds Very First Graduation

On May 28, NYU Shanghai’s pioneering Class of 2017 earned their NYU bachelor’s degrees as well as an NYU Shanghai diploma. The 264 graduates—hailing from China, the United States and 31 other countries—walked the hall of Shanghai’s Oriental Arts Center, packed with professors, friends, siblings and proud parents who travelled from around the world to celebrate the first Sino-US joint research university’s inaugural graduation ceremony.

On May 22, NYU Shanghai’s Commencement Photo Exhibition premiered at the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower’s Visitor Center. A memorandum of understanding between the University and the Tower was also signed to promote cooperation in boosting students’ extracurricular activities.

On May 20, the first annual NYU Shanghai Undergraduate Research Symposium showcased student research across all disciplines, presented before professors, peers and potential employers. To celebrate the symposium, students from Music Arts, Theater Arts and Dance brought to life a wonderful performance that included the first public rendition of the University’s Alma Mater.

To all of our rising seniors: the NYU Shanghai admissions process for Fall 2018 is starting soon!  Our admissions officers will start traveling around the world to visit high schools and Chinese language classrooms from September through December.  In the meantime, don’t forget to create your Common App account after August 1, 2017 and make sure to mark Shanghai as your first choice campus on the NYU Member Questions page.  If you have any questions at all, email us at shanghai.admissions@nyu.edu.

On May 26, The NYU Shanghai community unveiled the new “Qihang Study Room,” located in the academic building’s 4F Library. The room is dedicated to the graduating Class of 2017 by many of their parents. Around 20 parents attended the reception organized by the NYU Shanghai Education Development Foundation in recognition of their sustained contributions and support of the University.

Congrats to NYU Shanghai seniors Roxanne Roman, Kevin Pham and Zhang Zhan, who represented NYU Shanghai at the All-University Commencement in New York on May 17. Pham served as NYU Shanghai’s banner bearer, while Zhan served as the school representative and Roman delivered the Student Address.
