Last week, the 2023 Postdoctoral Carnival and Joint NYU Shanghai International Students Job Fair kicked off at NYU Shanghai. The afternoon of activities ranged from a lecture on the district’s talent related preferential policies, a panel on how to cultivate and retain postdoctoral talents, an official announcement of an updated list that further recognized overseas certificates and in-demand jobs, and a job fair.

At a ceremony recognizing Pudong-based organizations recruiting talents with postdoctoral research experience, the Pudong government awarded subsidies of RMB 200,000 to enterprises hiring postdocs, including NYU Shanghai.

“NYU Shanghai has received great support from the Pudong government over the years,” said NYU Shanghai Chancellor Tong Shijun at the ceremony. “We have been cultivating innovative talents through world-class scientific research and committed to public services over the past decade. The job fair, he said, was part of NYU Shanghai’s contribution to the development of Pudong and Shanghai.”

Some 40 enterprises participated in the job fair, offering over 300 jobs. A dedicated area featured Pudong-based companies who were hiring postdoctoral graduates in science and technology. Organized by the Pudong New Area Overseas Talent Bureau, Pudong New Area Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, and NYU Shanghai, the event echoed a series of incentives announced by the Pudong government earlier this year to attract young scholars and researchers with doctoral degrees and postdoctoral research experience to work and settle down in the district.

Li Zhi, a third-year doctoral student who specializes in electric vehicle data, was at the carnival to learn about the incentives as well as career opportunities. He said he was particularly interested in the annual RMB 100,000 allowance offered to postdoctoral fellows through the district’s Postdoctoral Innovation Development Funding program. Financial incentives such as these make it easier for academics to live in the city.

Adib El Ounani ’23 majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics attended the fair and  applied for a software engineering position. He said he hoped to stay in Shanghai after graduation.

“I want to keep learning Chinese, which is definitely a draw for me to stay after graduation,” said the student, who is from Morocco. “ A lot of tech companies are hiring here.”

Chen Huaiyu, student of Master of Science programs in Organization Management & Strategy, joined the event to look for job opportunities, as well as to learn about incentives. As he had work experience, Chen said he was also considering starting his own company in the fast moving consumer goods industry.

Representatives from Pudong International Talent Station incubator set up a booth at the event to answer questions from future entrepreneurs like Chen. “The offer of rent-free work space for up to three months for entrepreneurs really drew my attention,” he said. “It is a great opportunity.”

Shanghai InnoStar Bio-Tech Co., Ltd. was among the employers that lookinged to recruit graduates of all education levels in biochemistry, medicine, and technology to join their company in Pudong. HR representative Zhao Wenjia said she connected with many interested applicants and received resumes from several suitable candidates.

“Compared to graduates from other universities, NYU Shanghai students impressed me with their global perspectives and clear visions about their career development,” Zhao said.
