NYU Shanghai, NYU Law, and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) signed a memorandum of understanding on Oct 3 that establishes a framework for cooperation to promote the rule of law and internship opportunities for NYU Shanghai students.
Under this agreement, students from NYU Shanghai and NYU Law will be eligible to participate in the IDLO Internship Program at IDLO offices around the world, including Rome, New York, Geneva and The Hague.
The three institutions hope to organize a series of roundtables, seminars, conferences, training programs or other events, starting in New York, Rome, Shanghai and The Hague to foster closer collaboration between academic, non-government and government partners on the rule of law.
“Law students are the future of a legal profession that works to preserve peace, eradicate poverty and encourage economic opportunity. IDLO looks forward to welcoming the top talent found at NYU and working together to further the rule of law for sustainable development,” said Irene Khan, Director-General of IDLO.
Commenting on the agreement, NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman said, “This MOU will offer our students a unique opportunity to apply the distinctive education they are receiving at one of the world's finest universities, and learn from invaluable first-hand experiences at IDLO, a truly remarkable intergovernmental organization dedicated to the promotion of the rule of law.”
“We have long made it a priority at NYU Law to incorporate a global focus in our curriculum, and the IDLO internship program embodies that,” said Trevor Morrison, dean of NYU Law. “It will enable our students to take part in the vital work of reforming and strengthening laws and institutions in order to champion rule of law around the world.”
