October 13, 2015 - The NYU Shanghai Art Gallery’s film program, Making Waves with Moving Images, held its first screening. Its curator, Qian Lin, introduced the program - a collaboration between NYU's Asian Film & Media Initiative and NYU Shanghai Art Gallery - and its first screening of DV China by acclaimed filmmaker Zheng Dasheng 郑大圣. The documentary tells the story of the making of a TV drama by a group of villagers in the rural area of Jiangxi province, led by Mr. Chou, the director of the local cultural center. With his crew, and eventually the whole village, they write, cast, shoot and edit their own homemade movie. After the screening, Zheng Dasheng, along with Profs. Zhen Zhang and Angela Zito discussed the documentary. Zheng confided that the most difficult part of creating a documentary, is capturing the rawness of the moment because, once the camera is rolling, real people put up façades. |
