Allen Young is the Area Head of World Languages and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Spanish at NYU Shanghai. Before joining NYU Shanghai in 2020, he taught at Northwestern University and St. Olaf College, and he worked as the Managing Editor of Neocha, a bilingual magazine about art and culture in Asia. He has published academic articles in the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos, and Hispanófila.
He regularly translates from Spanish and Chinese, and his work has appeared in The Guardian, the Los Angeles Review of Books China Channel, One-Way Street (单读), and Heichi (黑齿), among other publications. In 2018 he won the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute‘s Translation Prize for his version of Manuel Pérez Subirana’s novel Losing Is What Matters.
Professor Young holds a PhD in Hispanic Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Minnesota. His research interests include 20th- and 21st-century Spain, urbanism, translation, and intellectual history.
