  • Indian Kathak Performance and Future Technology

Dancer and choreographer Deepti Gupta introduced NYU Shanghai this week to Kathak, one of the eight forms of Indian classical dance. Gupta worked with IMA students and faculty to demonstrate the dance with motion capture technology. “The frontier perspective and advanced exploration of NYU Shanghai IMA impressed me. I am glad it offers me an opportunity to put traditional Indian dance and new motion capture technologies into practice,” Gupta said. Gupta also gave a performance of “The Lion’s Roar,” a contemporary Kathak dance she choreographed based on The Sutra of the Lion’s Roar of Queen Srimala, about Queen Srimala's journey of self-realization through the path of Buddhist vows.

This publication was conceived during a conference in 2016 at NYU Shanghai that coincided with Newman's 70th birthday.
