When asked about the children’s book The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, Dr. Andrea Mei-Ying Wu, (Associate Professor in the Department of Taiwanese Literature at National Cheng Kung University), was more than willing to provide the rich history surrounding the classic story.
“The story, about a bull who would rather smell flowers than fight in bullfights, has an anti-war and pacifist attitude. Leaf wrote the book, inspired by his friend, Robert Lawson--one of the best illustrators of children’s literature in the United States at that time. Lawson was frustrated with how people of his profession were not being taken seriously by the general public. He channeled his frustration into what became the book’s cover, inspiring Leaf to write the concise story that remains a cultural reflection of the 1930’s,” said Wu.
