Yao Wang is the Dean of Computer Science, Data Science, and Engineering, and Director of the Center for Data Science at NYU Shanghai. She is a Professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, with joint appointments in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Dean Wang has been on the faculty of NYU Tandon (formerly Polytechnic University) since June 1990. She was the Speaker for the NYU Tandon Faculty between Sept. 2017 to May 2019. She served as Associate and then Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs for NYU Tandon from June 2019 to Aug 2025.

Dean Wang holds a PhD (1990) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. She received MS (1985) and BS (1983), both in Electronic Engineering, from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Dean Wang’s research focuses on video coding and streaming, multimedia signal processing, computer vision, and medical imaging. She is the lead author of the widely adopted textbook Video Processing and Communications.  She received the New York City Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology in the Young Investigator Category in 2000. She was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2003 for contributions to video processing and communications. She received the IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper Award in the Field of Communications Systems in 2004, and the IEEE Communications Society Multimedia Communication Technical Committee Best Paper Award in 2011. She received the NYU Tandon Distinguished Teacher Award in 2016.
