John K. Miller

John K. Miller is an Adjunct Professor of Social Work, NYU Shanghai and Founding Director of the Sino-American Family Therapy Institute (SAFTI). He is a former full Professor of Social Work in the School of Social Development and Public Policy at Fudan University in Shanghai, a former US Fulbright Senior Research Scholar to China (2009–2010), former President of the Oregon Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (OAMFT), a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), a past Research Associate at the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto — the birthplace of brief therapy — and Special Editor of International Affairs for the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy (JMFT). An AAMFT Approved Supervisor, he has led annual scholarly delegations to China and Cambodia since 2005. His areas of research and scholarship include brief and single-session therapy, family therapy in China and Southeast Asia, international therapy, couples therapy, and competency in psychotherapy.

His forthcoming books include Time-Focused Therapy: A Clinical Philosophy for Seizing the Moment (Routledge) and Raising Autodidacts: A Family Therapist’s Guide to Raising Strong, Creative, and Self-Motivated Children in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (Simon & Schuster). His Chinese-language books with Fudan University Press include Family Therapy in the Chinese Context: Addressing the School Refusal Epidemic (forthcoming) and, as special editor, the Chinese edition of Becvar and Becvar’s Family Therapy: A Systemic Integration.
