化学

化学这一专业,致力于研究分子的世界:分子是如何由原子组成的,分子结构如何影响化学和物理属性,它们如何结合或聚集,从而形成构成物质世界的物质。对于深入理解和定义所有生命系统的结构特性与生化反应来说,掌握化学知识至关重要。因此,化学是连接物理学和生命科学的核心科学,也是诸多其他领域的基础,包括材料科学、地球科学和法医学等。21世纪社会面临的例如应对气候变化、获取清洁能源和确保粮食安全等的挑战,归其根本都是化学问题。化学专业课程以全球视野和广泛的科学课程为核心,为学生提供了应对这些挑战必不可少的全面视角。

上海纽约大学化学专业的一个主要特点,是在深度和广度之间取得平衡:在学习了化学、物理学和生物科学基础科学课程后,学生会进行有机化学、物理化学讲座及实验等重要学习环节。学生可灵活选择感兴趣的方向,并修读三门或以上的化学选修课程,其领域涉及无机化学、计算化学与生物化学。学习优秀的学生,被鼓励与教授一起开展研究项目,完成本科毕业论文,获得化学荣誉学士学位。化学专业的一个显著特征是注重创造力,无论是合成新分子,发现新反应与新材料,或提出新的物质理论。

学习化学专业为化学及相关领域的研究生阶段学习打下坚实基础,这些领域包括生物化学、生物医学和材料科学等。化学专业的学生,也为包括医学、药剂学、牙科学、验光学、兽医学、法医学和法学等专业方向的深造做好充分准备。如果学生打算在毕业后就业,化学专业培养的创造性与定量技能将让学生受益,并能转换于数据科学、生物技术、金融学等不同领域。
