Joanna Waley-Cohen Honored Shanghai Bestows Silver Magnolia

September 8, 2015 - The Shanghai Municipal Government presented the silver Magnolia award to Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen, Julius Silver Professor of History, for her outstanding contributions to the city.

Following the ceremony, Waley-Cohen said, "I am truly honored to have received a Silver Magnolia award, which signals recognition of NYU Shanghai's role in the life of the city of Shanghai.

Zhang Xiaosong, Director General of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office presided over the ceremony and expressed the hope that the award will encourage more international friends to enhance exchange and cooperation between Shanghai and the rest of the world.

Established in 1989 and named after the official flower of Shanghai, the award is given annually in recognition of the contributions by members of Shanghai's expatriate community. This year, Provost Waley-Cohen was recognized as one of several honorees, including among others business leaders, professors and scientists, from 19 countries.
