PhD Programs

NYU Shanghai offers several PhD programs in collaboration with other schools and departments of NYU. The programs award NYU degrees. We invite you to learn more below.

Joint NYU PhD with Graduate School of Arts & Science
Joint NYU PhD with Graduate School of Arts & Science

NYU Shanghai’s joint PhD with the NYU Graduate School of Arts & Science provides an alternative track for students accepted to various NYU GSAS PhD programs to pursue advanced doctoral research across two campuses, in New York City and in Shanghai. Currently, these alternative tracks exist within the NYU GSAS PhD programs for biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and neural science.

Students admitted to these programs normally spend their first year and one or more additional semesters in New York City, depending on the discipline, for PhD course-work, before transitioning full-time to research groups led by faculty in Shanghai. Students frequently also alternate between both campuses for rotations, whether during summers or other times of the year. Financial aid packages provided to students in the program are generous with scholarships covering NYU tuition and fees, 4- or 5-year PhD stipends equivalent to NYU GSAS PhD stipends, additional travel allowances, and global health insurance all included. Upon graduation, students receive New York University PhD degrees.

The program offers both a rigorous and enriching academic experience, along with a truly distinctive global experience. In Shanghai, students benefit from NYU Shanghai’s cutting-edge research environment, where new world-class platforms for discovery and exploration, training, and international collaboration are being pioneered, all while living in one of the world’s most incomparable cities.

Applications are submitted via the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science online portal, where students can designate their interest in Shanghai tracks. The portal opens on a rolling basis through September for each program. Students are encouraged to visit the portal regularly for announcements about when each program will begin accepting applications.
