Assistant Arts Professor

Rune Madsen is Assistant Arts Professor at NYU Shanghai’s Interactive Media Arts program. He holds an MPS from New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program and a BFA in Film and Media Studies from the University of Copenhagen.

Professor Madsen’s research focuses on the intersection between design, systems, and programming languages. He is the author of Programming Design Systems, a book that reimagines the graphic design curriculum using a programming language as the tool for the designer. His work has been shown in galleries in the US, Mexico, Brazil, and Denmark, and featured on David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Vogue, Engadget, Techcrunch, Gizmodo, Buzzfeed, Mashable, etc. He is also the creator of Rune.js, a JavaScript library for creating generative graphic design.

Before joining NYU, Professor Madsen worked as an Interactive Developer for the New York Times, and as Director of Software Development and Creative Director (Digital Design) for O’Reilly Media.
