Cross-Cultural Conversations

Mar 18 2016

Every month, the Intercultural Conversation Circle brings faculty and staff together to discuss new topics on the dynamics of culture and communication, in hopes to further articulate and describe what is regularly experienced at NYU Shanghai. On February 26, the Circle met to share thoughts on a TED Talk given by cross-cultural expert Pelligrino Riccardi, who spoke about different cultures having a mutual understanding and ability to coexist.

“We are lucky to have the chance to have discussions with faculty members to dig into certain issues and figure out better ways of communicating interculturally in the setting of NYU Shanghai,” said Sophie Hu, Associate Director of Human Resources.

Whether developing cross-cultural skills to facilitate cultural events, or providing a platform to sincerely communicate on work-related issues, the Circle creates a space for reflection on interpersonal relations, where one can meditate on their own experience and personal growth.

“Ultimately, we hope that our conversations about culture and communication will spill over into the wider NYUSH community,” Associate Director of English for Academic Purposes Brandon Conlon said, mentioning that ICC plans to host a panel discussion at the end of the semester, inviting the wider community to join in. The next Intercultural Conversation Circle will take place March 25.
