NYU Reynolds/D-Prize Social Venture Competition

The NYU Reynolds/D-Prize Social Venture Competition will challenge aspiring social entrepreneurs to create social change by designing a new venture with the potential to alleviate poverty across the country or around the world. Winning ideas will have a plan to effectively create social change, launch a new pilot or refine an existing one, and scale to serve the greatest number of people. Read below for information on eligibility, steps to participate and judging criteria.

China Thinks Big Venture Challenge

Spring annually

2015 China Thinks Big Venture Challenge, an entrepreneurship incubator that provides an opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to develop and refine business ideas contextualized in China under the guidance of entrepreneurship professionals and mentors from Harvard Business School and professional entrepreneurs. At the conclusion of the three-day incubator, teams will have the chance to showcase their ideas to students, professionals, venture capitalists, and professors from the Harvard and Greater Boston communities at the China Thinks Big Entrepreneurship Conference with the possibility of seed funding.

Great Minds 3 Minutes 1 Day

Share your innovative idea at the Falling Walls Lab New York, win a scholarship and travel to the finale in Berlin! Present a research project, business plan, entrepreneurial or social initiative that is relevant to the world of today -- in 3 minutes! Bachelor's and Master's students, PhD candidates, postdocs, junior professors and entrepreneurs are invited to apply, and will present their pitch at the annual Lab in New York City.

International New York Times (INYT) Asia-Pacific Writing Competition

The INYT Writing Competition began in 2009 in Hong Kong as part of International New York Times InEducation program, which encourages students to engage with current affairs and become globally-minded by reading the daily newspaper. This year the competition has been expanded to include all of Asia and NYU Shanghai students were invited to participate for the very first time. This year's topic is "Global Youth" and all entries will be judged by International New York Times awarding-winning newsroom, with the winning entry published in the International New York Times Asia-Pacific edition. Students are encouraged to read the INYT to better understand the types of issues covered by the newspaper and the journalistic writing style, and all participants will be offered a free 4-week digital subscription to NYTimes.com to assist them with their submission, along with a certificate of participation.

iGEM Competition

Fall, annually.

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This competition is a platform for motivated undergraduates to do pioneering research in the field of synthetic biology. Student teams are given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Working at their own schools over the summer, they use these parts and new parts of their own design to build biological systems and operate them in living cells. This project design and competition format is an exceptionally motivating and effective teaching method.
